Gynecomastia: Exercise Can Make it Worse?

bodybuilders gynecomastia

It may sound counterintuitive, but it’s true: exercise can make man boobs look even more prominent.

We realize it may seem a bit ironic too, perhaps even cruel. That’s because before considering male breast reduction, New York patients are often willing to pull out all the stops to reduce enlarged breasts, including spending hours in the gym. After all, residents of the Big Apple are often willing to invest in looking and feeling their best. But all that exercise may actually have the opposite of the desired effect. Here’s an explanation.

Excess breast tissue is found on top of the pectoral muscles, just underneath the skin. When men make an effort to build those muscles and develop an attractive, chiseled physique, the breast tissue actually gets pushed out even further. This is why we work with so many body builders in our Manhattan practice. On a torso that’s otherwise smooth and sleek, there’s just no place to hide a case of moobs!

And for men who work hard in the gym, there’s no hiding the disappointment and embarrassment they feel when facing the fact that gynecomastia simply will not budge.

We’re pleased to share good news with patients like these when we meet in the consultation room in New York. Male breast reduction is a relatively non-invasive, outpatient procedure with a fairly easy recovery period. What’s more, in the right surgeon’s hands, scarring is minimal and complications are rare. With the unwanted breast tissue gone, supple skin tightens – sometimes almost immediately. At last those hard won contours are revealed!

You don’t need to be an avid body builder to benefit from surgery, though. Check out our before and after gynecomastia photos to see for yourself. Men of all ages, sizes and shapes can look and feel better without womanly breasts.

Whether or not male breast reduction surgery is the right choice for you, we would be pleased to meet you and share information. Why not give us a call at 212-570-6080.
